Lets break down each meaning of the word as Calvino sees it. A cookie recipe has to be well-defined and well-calculated, if not, you will not have a tasty outcome. Like a sword of knowledge and enlightenment, cutting through the shackles of ignorance and nescience. It seeks to represent any and every area of knowledge — science, philosophy, politics, you name it — intertwining them all into narrative and setting. Exceptional writing renders visible that which tends to be neglected in our everyday relationship to reality. This is not about technology; it is far older. But since the human mind cannot conceive the infinite, and in fact falls back aghast at the very idea of it, it has to make do with what is indefinite, with sensations as they mingle together space, illusory but pleasurable all the same.

Like a system of poetry — a system that could be deemed artificial and mechanical — rules can produce inexhaustible freedom and wealth of invention. Vagueness carries with it positive attributes, but only in the hands of someone who masters exactitude.

Choosing the best word or sentence is not about being less verbose or the callvino flamboyant. He goes on to say, that even writing that appears to be vague is, in itself, a form of exactitude. In the boundless realm of literature there are always new avenues to be explored. Being concise is different to being precise.
