It will be difficult When I reviewed A Countless Below Stairs last week, I felt as though I couldn’t single out one of Eva Ibbotson’s books for a 5-star rating because I love them all and don’t have a favorite.
It took me about pages of reading this one or scanning it to become half-way interested. Her secret safely hidden until one day her life collides with a handsome man. Technically not a princess novel, but if you have aristocrats and pretty dresses, it counts in my book. Should she marry Maxi, a prince who lives in a damp and crumbling home or can she help patronize the arts? Tessa, or Putzerl as she is known to her family and friends, is a young member of a class of people who had been far above the common people, her friends, family and acquaintances are princes, archduchesses and barons.
The book jumped around constantly from multiple points of view. Unsurprisingly, no one is who they seem to be and that presents several sticky problems for our protagonists to tackle. Una novela feelgood con personajes cargados de humor.

The book had been in her head for years before she actually wrote it. No one there knows who she really is, or that a fairy-tale castle is missing its princess, and Tessa is determined to keep it that way.
I like her blend of simple storytelling mixed with delicious description, only in this case I found the description began to detract from the story. It sounds like it would be a lovely romance.
All of it makes you want to put down the book and grab the first tickets to Austria that very moment. A romantic, wistful story that pulls at the heartstrings. Ibbotson has said that she disliked thinking about the supernatural, and created the characters because she wanted to decrease her readers’ fear of such things. I’m only 40 pages in and I’m a bit annoyed with the author. And it wasn’t even the random big words see earlier rant below. I just couldn’t get into it.
Look, she lived to be seventy-five! By the time I was about a third of the way into the book, I was hooked. Ibbotson was also noted for several works of fiction for adults.
This is a historical fiction book that is largely a romance, but there is a good plot line besides just that. Don’t go thinking these are going to be adorable or cute in the way that you’d find Stephanie Perkins or Kasie Wests books.

I was suffering from a terrible book hangover – four DNF and one crime book I managed to read but without enjoyment. Guy Farne is an orphan who is given into the care of Martha Hodge a young widow. They may not be so likable, but at least they are very realistic and add entertainment to the story.

I love Eva Ibbotson’s world. A Song for Mahic. The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet. This book is so much more a romance between Tessa and music than it is between Tessa and Guy.
